Situations That Call for a Metal-Free Crown

A dental crown is placed to protect and restore a tooth that has been structurally compromised. We use only biocompatible zirconia and EMAX materials.

Cracked or Fractured Tooth

A crown bonds around the entire tooth and stops an existing crack from deepening with every bite. Early treatment is the difference between saving and losing the tooth.

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Chronic grinding wears down enamel and weakens tooth structure over time. Zirconia crowns are durable enough to withstand the forces of bruxism while protecting the underlying tooth.

Severe Tooth Decay

When decay is too extensive for a filling, a crown removes all infected material and covers the remaining healthy tooth structure, sealing it from further bacterial access.

After a Root Canal

Root canal treatment removes the nerve, leaving the tooth brittle and prone to fracture. A crown placed after protects it from splitting and restores full chewing function.

Replace a Large Filling

When a filling covers more than half a tooth's surface, the remaining structure is at risk of splitting. Replacing it with a crown restores full strength and protects long-term.

Replace an Old Metal Crown

If you have an old porcelain-fused-to-metal crown with a gray gumline, sensitivity, or visible wear, replacing it with a metal-free EMAX or zirconia crown improves both aesthetics and biocompatibility.

Zirconia vs. EMAX — Choosing the Right Crown

Both materials are entirely metal-free and biocompatible. The right choice depends on the tooth location, bite force, and aesthetic priorities.

Best for Molars & High Bite Force

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is the strongest all-ceramic material available for dental crowns. It resists chipping, cracking, and fracture under heavy bite forces — making it the gold standard for back teeth and patients with bruxism.

  • Highest fracture resistance of any ceramic
  • 100% metal-free and biocompatible
  • Can last 20+ years with proper care
  • Ideal for molars and bruxism patients
  • No gray lines at gumline
Best for Front Teeth & Aesthetics

EMAX Crowns

EMAX (lithium disilicate ceramic) is prized for its exceptional translucency and lifelike appearance — it mimics the natural light transmission of real enamel better than any other material. The first choice for visible front teeth and cosmetic restorations.

  • Most natural appearance of any crown
  • 100% metal-free, fully biocompatible
  • Exceptional light translucency like real enamel
  • Ideal for front teeth and cosmetic cases
  • Lasts 15–20 years with proper care

Your Crown Appointment, Step by Step

Most metal-free crowns are completed in two appointments. Here's exactly what to expect at each visit.

1

Consultation & X-Rays

Your provider examines the tooth, reviews X-rays, and determines whether a crown is the appropriate treatment. Insurance coverage is verified. Most initial consultations are complimentary.

2

First Appointment — Preparation

The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia. All decay and any existing metal restorations are removed. The tooth is then shaped to create proper clearance for the crown. Impressions are taken and sent to the dental laboratory for fabrication of your custom crown.

A temporary crown that resembles your natural tooth is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being crafted.
3

Second Appointment — Permanent Crown

When your custom zirconia or EMAX crown is ready, you return to have it seated. The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is checked for fit, bite, and color match before being permanently cemented.

Important post-op care: After permanent crown seating, allow 24 hours for the cement to fully cure. Avoid hard or chewy foods during this time to ensure proper bonding.

After Your Crown Is Placed

A little care in the first 24 hours ensures your crown bonds properly and lasts for decades.

Wait 24 HoursAllow the permanent cement to fully cure before eating hard or chewy foods. This ensures a strong, lasting bond.
Avoid Hard & Chewy FoodsFor the first 24 hours, skip hard candies, ice, crusty bread, and sticky or chewy foods.
Normal Brushing & FlossingYou can brush and floss normally after your appointment. Be gentle around the gumline for a few days.
Call Us With Any ConcernsSome sensitivity is normal. If your bite feels uneven or sensitivity persists beyond a week, call us — a simple adjustment fixes it quickly.
